Recycling Guide for Inglewood Businesses

Businesses Make a Difference
Inglewood generates more than 120,000 tons of solid waste every year and more than half of that amount comes from businesses. The Solid Waste Management Act of 1989 (AB 939) requires that each municipality reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfills 50% by the year 2000.

The Public Works Department’s Environmental Services Division is working to develop programs to help businesses recycle. Your business could reduce disposal costs and protect natural resources by recycling and practicing waste prevention. Together we will make a difference!

Reduce Waste
Waste prevention is something your business can do today that can significantly reduce the amount of waste that is disposed at local landfills. Waste prevention is any practice that causes a reduction in the generation of waste. Here are some simple and inexpensive ideas:

• Make double-sided copies
• E-mail or post information on an announcement board
• Use ceramic mugs for coffee
• Reuse large envelopes, boxes and packaging materials
• Use scrap paper for notes
• Buy products that can be recycled

Please contact the Public Works Department, Environmental Services Administrator, for more waste prevention ideas for your business.

Recycle
A representative from the City will assist you in the development of a program for your business to recycle. Staff will analyze the amount and type of recyclables in your waste stream. Staff will recommend a recycling program that meets your needs, based on the results of the waste audit.
After you have decided to participate in the recycling program, the City will help you to implement it. Your business will be provided with printed materials and City staff is available to present the new recycling program to your employees.

Close the Loop
It is equally important is to purchase recycled content products.
When you purchase goods with recycled content, you help to create a demand for the materials collected in our recycling program. Buying recycled content products is important to develop and maintain markets for the materials diverted from landfill disposal. A wide variety of recycled content products are available. Look for this symbol when purchasing them.
