Beginning in June of each year, the Department of Public Works, Street Section, activates its annual street resurfacing program (using a slurry seal method). Slurry seal is applied to the pavement to fill minor cracks and add an aesthetic skid resistant surface to the street. Each year the Street Section applies a slurry seal pavement coating mixture to approximately one quarter of the residential streets in the City. This year’s program will be accomplished in two phases, concluding in November 2002.
Streets scheduled for resurfacing will be closed from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to all through traffic on the day of the slurry application. Area residents and businesses will be given advanced notice of the program and traffic restrictions. Temporary "No Parking" signs will be posted on streets a minimum of 24 hours in advance. ‘Door hangers’ will also be used to notify affected residences and businesses of the program, schedule and parking restrictions. Streets will not be slurry sealed on weekends or Mondays. All streets scheduled for resurfacing Tuesday through Friday will be posted Monday mornings.
The first phase of the this years program will commence in Area 1, or from 76th Street on the northern boundary of the City; to Manchester Boulevard on the southern boundary; West Boulevard on the western boundary; and, Van Ness Avenue on the eastern boundary. This phase of the program is expected to take approximately two months to complete.
The second phase of the program is scheduled to begin for Area 2 in September. This area encompasses Century Boulevard on the northern boundary of the City; to Prairie Avenue on the western boundary; Van Ness Avenue on the eastern boundary; and, 118th Place on the southern boundary.
