School is almost out and it’s time to plan summer activities. Don’t miss out on the free lunches offered to youth 18 and under at seven different locations in Inglewood. Free lunches will be served Monday through Friday beginning June 22, 2009, and ending on August 28, 2009, with the exception of July 3, 2009, in observance of Independence Day. The Summer Food Service Program is funded through a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The City's Annual July 4th Celebration and Fireworks spectacular will take place at Edward Vincent Jr. Park, located at 700 Warren Lane. The Celebration will begin at the outdoor amphitheater where live bands will perform on the stage from noon to 8:00 p.m. At dusk, an elaborate fireworks display will light up the skies to culminate the festivities.

The Inglewood Senior Center and Fall Prevention Center of Excellence will present InSTEP, a 12-week model fall prevention program designed to increase balance and stability in adults 65 and older. For more information, click the link below or call Carrie Greer at (310) 412-5338.

Are you a grandparent serving as a parent again? Are you caring for a Senior Citizen or for a disabled adult? Perhaps you are in need of strategies to avoid caregiver burnout or could benefit from caregiver resource information. If you answered YES to any of these questions then you should plan to attend the Inglewood Neighborhood Action Council Cheerful Givers from the Heart Caregiver Conference.
The Caregiver Conference will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Gladys Waddingham Library Lecture Hall, 101 W. Manchester Blvd, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission to this event is FREE and all are invited.

Registration for the City of Inglewood’s I-Read Summer Reading Program is currently underway. Students, grades K-12, are invited to participate in this fun-filled program. Program activities will include free arts and crafts activities, face painting, sing-a-longs, storytelling, and live entertainment, all designed to encourage youth to read during their summer break.

The City has yet another wonderful recognition by a prestigious publication for the restoration work done on the History of Transportation Mural. The January/February 2009 edition of American Art Review magazine features the mural in an 8-page story, written and submitted by Anita Bennett of Young Communications of Los Angeles.

Skateboarding is the hottest and fastest-growing "extreme" sport in the United States and Inglewood is keeping pace with the growth. Inglewood has three thriving skate parks that are filled with excited and energetic skateboarders. Skate Parks are located at the following locations:
Darby Park - 3400 W. Arbor Vitae
Rogers Park - 400 W. Beach
Vincent Park - 700 Warren Lane

Thirty (30) seniors in Inglewood who have extremely high nutritional risk scores, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, dehydration, and a variety of chronic illnesses are showing great improvement as a result of their participation in the “Be Well” nutrition and exercise program, offered by the Inglewood Senior Center, 330 Centinela Avenue , Inglewood, CA 90302. They are meeting twice a week for four months, and will continue weekly maintenance classes for an additional six months. This second “Be Well” class that has been offered at the Senior Center is funded by the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Administration on Aging as a national model of health and wellness.

| | The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department is offering two four-week sessions of Summer Day Camp fun at four locations – Darby Park, Lockhaven Center, Edward Vincent Park and Rogers Park. Session I will take place from June 22 – July 17; Session II will be held July 20 – August 14. Registration is ongoing until all slots are filled.

The Edward Vincent Jr. Park Swimming Pool will be open this year on Friday, July 3. General swim is from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday. Admission is $1. Racquet Ball and Weight Room facilities are available for use by residents and the community at large at both Rogers Park and Darby Park. A monthly membership fee is required. The racquet ball membership fee is $12 (resident) and $14 (non-residents); weight room membership is $10 (resident) and $12 (non-residents).
